Virginia Tech Alumni Association
Frequently Asked Questions

Q:What geographic area does the Tidewater Chapter of the VTAA cover?
A:We cover Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, and north east North Carolina. There is a VTAA Chapter on the Peninsula and a Chapter responsible for Suffolk and parts westward.

Q:Who can join the Tidewater Chapter of the VTAA?
A:Anyone who wants to support Virginia Tech in the local community. This includes Hokies (students & alumni), Pokies (Parents of Hokies), Spokies (Spouses of Hokies) and Fokies (Friends of Hokies).

Q:How much does it cost to join the Tidewater Chapter of the VTAA?
A:There are no membership fees. We are purely a volunteer organization. Some people will make donations to the chapter's scholarship fund in lieu of a membership fee but that is entirely up to them. Since there are no membership fees, all events are "pay as you go" and most are free to attend like the Hokie Happy Hours and Football Game Watching parties.

Q:Are you affiliated with the Tidewater Chapter of the Hokie Club?
A:Not exactly. Although we all support Virginia Tech, the Hokie Club is a membership related organization that supports the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund. You have to formally join the Hokie Club. Please checkout their website by clicking here and consider joining this valuable organization!

Q:How do you raise money for scholarships?
A:We hold two major fundraising events per year. They are our annual Golf Tournament and annual Winter Gala. As a general rule, the fee collected to participate covers the cost to the chapter to host the event. Most, if not all, of the money collected through the sponsorships, raffle tickets and donations, and auctioned items goes directly into the scholarship fund.
We also raise money through relationships we have formed with many local "Hokie Friendly" businesses. We help them by giving them advertising space on our website and mentioning them in chapter emails and at chapter events. They help us by making donations to the chapter. Check out our sponsorship page to see the companies that support our efforts.

Q:What types of social events do you host during a typical year?
A:We hold several events each year. They are our annual Spring Pig Picking, Summer Hokie Happy Hours, and Fall Football Game Watching Parties. Please check out our events calendar for all the details regarding upcoming events. You never know...you may find yourself in our photoalbum!

Q:What types of community service projects do you perform?
A:We have our annual "Hokie Bird Fights Hunger" campaign where we volunteer at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. We also support the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters.

Q:How do I get involved?
A:The best way to get actively involved is to fill out the Volunteer Information form online by clicking on the "Get on List" button. Someone from the Chapter will contact you soon after to explore ways for you to get involved. You can also make arrangements to attend our monthly chapter meetings. See the events page for details on chapter meetings as well as all of our other events.
